When the .NET generic top-level extension was initially introduced in 1985, together with the first domain extensions on the Internet, it was meant to be used by Internet Service Providers or infrastructure entities. Taking into account that there were no particular conditions about the usage of the top-level domain extension, though, .NET domains were acquired and used for diverse purposes and by scores of people. This extension represents a good alternative to .COM, notably if the desired domain with the latter extension is not free for registration.

The dot NET domain extension supports internationalized names, so you can pick whether you want to target a particular country or region using a domain name in the local language, or the global web community – using a generic English name.
